Murallas (Old city walls)

Troughout the city there is, probably, the best testimony of the Sevilla´s history, that´s because the old city walls still have a good part that has been preserved.
The city walls have a long history, dating back to Roman times. It was the during the Almoravide period that the walls saw their greatest expansion and fortifications. At one time Seville was completely enclosed with the walls connecting to the Torre del Oro, the principal defensive position along the Guadalquivir River. A series of 19 gates to the city were erected, often named for their purpose. The last standing gate is that of the Macarena.
